Entertainment boards, always filled with favourite films, music, etc.
Which is great but you can never really get a sense of a favourite film from a two line discription, so...
Favourite paintings, posters, pictures, photogrpahs... with a handy link at least everyone can see exactly what your talking about
So here's one of my favorite painting (at least now I can look at it everytime I check the Entertainment board!)

William Degouves de Nuncques (http://www.artmagick.com/images/paintingsJune/degouve/degouve5.jpg) I can't get over his use of colour.
Victor Hugo's "Ecce" (http://paris.fr/musees/Maison_de_Victor_Hugo/COLLECTIONS/VICTOR_HUGO_/DESSINS/MVH_ECCE.htm) Ok, so this version isn't so clear, but I love his use of light and the posture of the hanged man.
Calligraphy by Hassan Massoudy the first one (http://www.alibaba.online.fr/calligraphie.html)
Anything by Enki Bilal (http://www.bilal.fr.st/) Ok, so he's a comic book artist, but the montage of thumbnails by him show how amazingly well he can express emotion.

i love giger's work, its so dark and forboding. it has a real eerie atmosphere to it. i especially like the pieces he did for the alien films. the preliminary set design sketches are absolutely mind-blowing. unfortuneatly i can't find the site that they're on:confused:

I always have liked Night Watch by Rembrandt ever since i studied it at school, went to see the original last year and it's hard to just walk off.

I really like Hockney. Not quite sure why. Think it's the coloring, and the "sterile" feel due to the geometry used. Also really like his polaroid projects. And Grand Canyon pictures.

Then there's Magritte. And I absolutely love how thoughtprovoking he can be. It's more the thought he procokes than the visual pleasure which I treassure about him.

This photo is the news image which means the most to me. It brought home for the first time, just how far authority will go to maintain control.
'1989 was also the year of the student massacre in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Three thousand students were demonstrating against martial law. The authorities sent tanks and armed troops into Tiananmen Square and opened fire on the students. Hundreds were killed, thousands injured'
Five months later the Berlin Wall came down.
Hockney...quite remarkable artist...he sold paintings of Californian swimming pools to extremely wealthy Californians with...swimming pools.
Nice work if you can get it !!

Meh let's resurrect it.
I'm a massive fan of, among other things, American realism. Kinda thing you imagine when you read Nabukov or F Scott Fitzgerald. My favourite artist by a mile is Edward Hopper. Here are some of my faves.
Nighthawks (http://www.cc.jyu.fi/~hastrup/nighthawks.jpg) - words cannot describe what this painting means to me. I could write pages about my layman interpretation to it. Suffice to say, the fact that there is no door is the most significant in my opinion.
Early Sunday Morning (http://www.mystudios.com/treasure/hopper/sunday.jpg) - the uneasy calm is what strikes me about this piece. Something's about to happen and you don't know what.
Solitude (http://www.soho-art.com/shopinfo/uploads/1076617848_large-image_35_solitude_56_1944_lg.jpg)
Also, in the American realism section, quite a famous painting that still scares the shit out of me.
American Gothic (http://korkos.club.fr/wood-01grand.jpg) by Grant Wood. Utterly terrifying. It's the woman's face and the man's stare.

Whats that picture, set in a 1940's or 1950's dinner on a corner of a street, looking in through the window of a man in a suit and hat, a woman in a dress and the dinner waiter behind the counter at night.
I love the picture but never found out who did it originally.

I'm not an art buff in any shape or form but the only painting I can think of that you just described is my favourite Nighthawks. As I said, I can babble on for hours about the beauty and more-than-real-reality of it. It's stunning in its bleakness.
Couldn't find a decent picture of Solitude so posted that ickle one. It's a lot better in my Hopper book.
Also a big fan of Goya. Whenever I'm in Spain I make a little trip to the Prado to see his stuff. Some examples;
Saturno (http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/desolation/goya_saturn-son.jpg) (Saturn)
Snowstorm (http://www.abcgallery.com/G/goya/goya36.JPG) - one of the finest uses of colour I have ever seen.
Asmodea (http://spanport.byu.edu/faculty/RosenbergJ/Images/19th%20century%20(romanticism,%20realisim)/asmodea.jpg) - wow.

This is called "John Joan and John at Cleethorpes" and it's really special to me because it's actually of my (great) aunt and uncle (in the blue and white stripy chairs). It's painted by John Yardley who is in fact one of their closest friends and a famous artist as well. My uncle was also a brilliant artist but never 'made it' like John Yardley did. He (my uncle) can't paint anymore though, after several strokes which is a real shame. I love this painting just because it's captured my aunt so beautifully, and with so few brush strokes. It's wonderfully understated and doesn't use many colours and even from that tiny picture I can tell it's her and it's just a perfect picture.
Anyone want to give me £950 to buy the original? :(
