A friend of mind suggested that I should start my own ISP and they would go through me.

What would you need to start off and where would you get time, hours, etc???

Doesnt sound silly or does it??

You would need shit hot internet connections, high-end powerful servers and stuff. And probably alot more. Oh and a better name than AOL. :p

Some companies that provide webspace offer a service where you can set up your own ISP through them. Obviously this costs money, but not as much as starting from scratch.
You'll either find them by using a search engine, or look for their ads in computing magazines that are more business/IT orientated.

Lots of money.

Or lots more money and expertise.

Or even more money and pay people with the expertise.

Oh, and insanity :D

not to offend u in anyway, but thru viewing a few of ur posts on this forum, i would have to say it does not seem obvious that you have the expertise or knowledge to start your own isp. Not saying u cant, just my opinion.

Give it a try anyway if ur determined.

Actually, all you need to start a basic ISP is a fast, reliable connection, such as a leased line (and somewhere for said line to access other networks, such as an even bigger ISP), routing equipment, dial-in lines and associated multiplexer modems.

Not forgetting, of course, machines to handle mail/web serving and (especially popular with governments recently) extreme amounts of logging and archiving.

And probably a load more that I forgot.

Not sure about telecoms charges in Oz, but the leased and dial-in lines make up a large proportion of the cost of such a venture.

As all businesses do, I'm sure it involves a lot of paper work, too.

Our local ISP has a couple of 622mbps lines to peer with other networks. They are fucking expensive...but...mmm...622mbps...
