View Full Version : External Modems
After my new computer came without a modem, I do obviously need one! I don't fancy opening the case myself, so I am considering a USB External modem, such as this one (http://www.savastore.com/products/product.asp?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10246165&pid=45&tid=3)
Anyone had experience of External modems, or know if this one (http://www.savastore.com/products/product.asp?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10246165&pid=45&tid=3) is any good?

US Robotics stuff is very good.
But you can probably get cheaper ones.
Just don't get the one that looks like a fish!

Indeed. I've had no problems at all with my USR external or internal modems, they tend to be better than the cheapo makes.
I've not tried a USB type though. To be honest I would be inclined to get a serial model.

External modems tend to be slightly slower.
Installing internal modems is actually not all that difficult, or you can get a friend who knows what they're doing to do it for you.

external modems tend to be better than internal ones, as they are self contained units that handle all the signalling themselves.
Some internal modems are external modems mounted internally, but most use your system processor.
with usb, an external modem can in fact be an internal modem mounted externally.
I would recommend a nice serial modem. Personally I'd recommend Multitech, but they used to be a bit pricy

The modem you picked looks fine in spec, I'm not sure what a good price range is at the moment, but bear in mind that you probably won't get all the call waiting etc. features working the way you want, if at all.
Anyway, just get broadband!!!

I don't know where you have got this idea from, but I have never found it to be the case.
The [modern] serial port is more than capable of handling the throughput from a 56k modem.
