What's the best way to submit sites to Google etc?

i do believe google works by searching through meta tags. as long as your page has decent metatags set up, google should find it

Partly, but google is much sophisticated than that these days. To get high ranking you need frequent updates, and links *to* your site from other highly ranked sites.

You can submit your site to the open directory project though, which will add it to the categorised listings and should ensure you get a listing at least. the url is http://dmoz.org/add.html but it's not working as i write this.
