What age do you think kids should be taught it?

How old were you when you were told?

Is it taught as a priority in school these days?

Why I ask is when I was at school we learned NOTHING. I remember once all the girls were taken into the school hall to be told about periods. So basically I grew up knowing nothing, well apart from all the crap that other kids used to make up :)

we didnt have sex education, in science we had a couple of lessons devoted to making babies, then we had some woman come round and give us a hygiene and period talk but thats about it. I mainly learned the basics and stuff from teen mags until I actually started doing it.

We had our first experience of sex education in year 4, then i had it every year (at least once or twice a fortnight) for a good few years into secondary school when it stopped in year 10... it was very detailed with going into emotional sides as well as the science etc...

mind you, i was watching the learning programmes they have on channel 4 in the morning when i was very bored i saw a sex education tv show.. going into oral sex, with kids demonstrating on ice polls and ice lollys i couldnt believe that  i thought that was going way to far to be that graphic on a learning video!

We started learning it in um Year 5.

We was shown them crappy videos and told about periods and stuff.

Dont think anyone actually cared though.

What was most embarrassing was the sex education we had in the last two years of school. I was the only "non-virgin" in my class :o

Yeah I remember, being in last year of primary school and the girls having to leave to watch a video and have a chat

They all came back so scared!

We got told a little bit about it, then we got told the gist of it in secondary school *by then most people already know all that*:p

In secondary school it's awful. The teachers (in our school at least) are told to make up their own curriculum based on what the governers have decided. They can basically teach anything. I would have been a lot better at teaching sex-ed than some of the teachers, because I've spent years on reputable sex-ed websites/forums, and I know the facts, and I know what's right, whereas the teachers can take their facts from whatever source they feel is best, and generally they choose the wrong ones.

In junior school (Year 6) we watched a video on it which had adult couples talking about the place of sex in their relationship intersperced with cartoon animations which I can still remember it "when two adults love each other very much they show this love through a special form of kissing and cuddling known as sex". Then we all went back to class and discussed it and put anonymous questions in a hat for the teacher and school nurse to discuss.

Then in senior school (3rd Form) in our last compulsory biology lesson our teacher burst into the class and said "This is the most important lesson I will ever teach you" then promptly put a condom on a polystryene penis. Then we watched some video from the late 80s with French and Saunders and other comedians revealing the truth behind common myths and explaining about different methods of contraception.

in year 7 we got two lessons on how babies were made and periods. then in year 10 a science teacher tried to explain about STI's and periods and that kindsa stuff but all the classes were really immature bout it and we learned nothing. they were immature cos they probably all knew bout it anyway. i learned all i know from mates and mags and stuff.

I know I'm classed as ancient at 25, but we had vertually no sex education when I was at school. The only sex education I got was from my dad and it was "Just behave yourself - you know what I mean".!!!

My geography teacher, who is one of the pastorial (sp?) staff and abit weird, told us how he was teaching the 4th years about how the sperm get to the egg by making a "womb" from tables, and pretending to be a sperm.

We have such a quality system in place.

Oh, and while we were having a dress rehersal for a concert tomorrow night, there was a table right infront of the stage with polystryene penis' bluetacked to it and condoms in various stages of emplacement on it. Off putting to say the least. Trust us to be double booked with a health fair type thing for the 4th years.

In Italy children are taught sex education in their equvilant of primary school, the age of consent is 12 and they have one of the lowest teenage pregnancy rates is Europe, if not the world.
Maybe education is better than restriction.

Yeah, I've been saying that for years. There are too many prudes out there who reckon it'll encourage kids to have sex at a young age. Clearly it doesn't like.
