You can get programs that look out for popups, and stop them. Use a search engine, and use search criteria such as "Popup killer download" to find one. There are plenty of freeware ones out there. The one I've used the most is, unsurprisingly, called Popup Killer.
Just one thing though. They kill just about all popup windows, even ones you might want - eg on this site, if you want more smilies and click on the Get More link, they open up in a popup window, which will be killed each time by the popup killer.

it doesnt stop the ones that are built in to websites but it purges your computer of all the programmes that install themselves without telling you and spy on you and bombard you with adverts even when your not using the internet...

my computer runs about twice as fast since i did that as well, i had that many of those bloody things.

I use pop-up stopper and it's a blessing. Especially on geocities sites and yahoo where that annoying man with the damn cheeky smile pops up every 10 seconds!!! Also stops dialers downloading on my search for porn. Did I say that? Nooo, twasn't me it was that GOOSE!

I use Pop-up stopper. It stops all pop-ups but if you want to open a pop-up box or new window you can use shift or ctrl. Much better :p

I *think* you can
A) go in internet options and have a setting that refuses cookies on [annoying for having to log in all the time but less popups]
B) delete all cookies

although someone will have to confirm this...
