I am thinking of buying some decks - just for my room to mess around on. Does anyone have any recomendations on some good starter kits?

If you just looking for some messing around in your room then something like one of the Numark DJ Packages (http://www.numark.com/) will suit you nicely. Make sure you buy Direct Drive as apposed to Belt Drive (Basically Direct Drive starts faster, which is what you need especially as your trying to release your other record onto a beat....
Numark do a Battle Pak V4.0 (http://www.numark.com/products/product_view.php?v=overview&n=53) which is quite good, you've got your Hi, Med and Low swtiches.. along with 2 Channels which is all you need. If you have a stereo with Aux then this could be pretty nice, you can wire your package through your stereo which saves you money on amp and speakers... Thats selling for 499 pound over your end aparently!
Personally I wouldn't recommend HTFR except for actually finding some record gems which otherwise you wouldn't be able to get (they have some good secondhand old stuff) As for records the smaller independent shops usually carry the best stuff, I can remember the HMV in Blackpool where I used to live being quite good too - mostly commercial stuff but the odd bootleg and gem lying around.
Numark are good for a starting package, I remember back in the day *scratches beard* when I started on 2 x Soundlab 1600 Belt Drives and a Gemini 626 Pro Mixer (which is still in my opinion a good mixer) and that was great, I kept them for about 8 months and hammered out my happy hardcore quite contently. I then moved on to Soundlab CDJs for a few months before buying a dream pair of limited red edition Vestax PDX A2S (http://www.axemusic.com/products/audio/turntables/vestax_pdx_a2s.htm) (instead of Technics, which I had the cash to do) still sticking with my trusty 626 mixer..
Vestax are good decks, not quite the industry standard (Technics 1210s) but fantastic to use, wouldn't personally say anything bad about them. I sold them though to move over to NZ, probably one of the hardest things I've never done in my life...
I'm now using Technics 1210 Mk3s (http://www.avland.co.uk/technics/sl1210m3) and a very basic Numark DM1001x Mixer (http://www.numark.com/products/product_view.php?v=overview&n=25) and have that wired through my 160w stereo, which is perfect. The vast majority of the clubs I play in use 1210s or 1200s so when it comes to look and feel I can't go wrong... :D

If they are Technics I'll take a stab he either has 1200s/1210s or 1210m2/3S, those are basically whats known as industry standard. If he were to play out in clubs then they'd be more than likely the table he would play on, which matters a touch because all these different brands of turntable have a different feel to them, its very much like going from a manual to an automatic when it comes to cars, it takes a while to get used to them...
For example, I apply different ammounts of pressure to Vestax decks when slowing/speeding up the table as I would to Technics, how this matters? Well if your in a club and you need to make a last minute change then 0.3 of a BMP out is very noticable in a club and you'd hear the train track sound of beats clashing being out, if I'd had no experience with Technics then I might have a different method of correcting this... its hard to explain..
Hope you catch my drift :)

Just go to www.decks.co.uk or www.jbsmusic.com.
They both sell the cheapest DJ gear.
