How many people here love picotto!
He's been branded by certain media like mix mag as the god of techno...
So what i want to know is why he dont play at techno clubs, orbit, atomic jam, bugged out, voodoo etc and whys he doing sets down at gatecrasher and godskitchen.
Ive been playing techno for years and im amazed by the amount of people who worship him! he plays the same tune for 7 mins (u just cant do that with techno) its all about mixing and using fx to the full.. some techno djs use 3 decks and keep them running for at least 4 mins and know how to take their set somewhere..
Is it me or can the media turn someone so crap into something so big..
And by the way.,. i used to like picotto a few years ago, cant really understand why he's gone this way with his music..

I preferred picotto when he was more trancier, but i think he did that to establish himself.
Now hes playin the dark and dirty stuff he wants to play.
Personally i think hes a excellent DJ, but i find techno really boring so after an hour or 2 i just need to listen to summit else.
So what i want to know is why he dont play at techno clubs, orbit, atomic jam, bugged out, voodoo etc
dunno why, but maybe the clubs just havnt tried to book him.

I know alot of people really luv Picotto but i just wish they would see what real techno is, not this commercial techno that seems to be rising up!
Techno has been around for many years and it will be for along time, You have to see my point... Techno has always been really underground and now picotto has come along and everyone thinks he's the creator of this type of music! He's taking all the credit for it.. how many people have heard of or seen djs like chris liebing, surgeon, umek, dave clarke, dj rush etc. thats what its all about !!
The worst thing is, if it carrys on and it gets big.. weve got a whole new band wagon thing going. It shudn't happen but with the likes of julesy n co... who knows, they seem to get anything big these days..
Do any of you here goto techno clubs and know what im on about and agree with me here?

You totally know the score mate, couldn't agree with you more! Picotto is a bit of a fake to be honest!
As to the techno bandwagon, Fergie has already jumped on...

Ummm, no he isn't mate. He plays soft techno actually! Or you could say he is between techno and trance because he puts in trance like breakdowns into techno songs. If you seriously think he is between trance and hard house then you obviously don't know very much about dance music genres...

for a start igauna, lizard, and komodo are all getting old now as is that album, his newer stuff is very different. also most of the stuff on that album is commercial stuff and isnt really proper hard house at all.
lastly, theres a huge difference between the songs picotto produces and the sort of music he plays when he djs. i made a point of seeing him at GK GG cause i love all his older stuff and really like "back to cali" but his set was completly different to what i was expecting nothing like any of that,
i personaly thought it was crap but thats just my opinion.

His sound is different to everyone else although it isn't original. He also steals from other artists blatantly. Picotto rips off techno from Chris Liebing. He idolises him and worships him, plays quite a lot of his stuff, and copies it too:
Mauro Picotto - Baguette = Chris Liebing - Damel
It would seem he even ripped off people in his trance days:
Mauro Picotto - Like This Like That = Armin Van Buurin - Blue Fear
If I take a step back however and just listen to his music, it's OKish I guess, but it's nothing compared to real techno. Picotto plays poofy fake techno in my opinion.
I'll give him a bit of credit though, at least he's a clubber. At Gatecrasher NEC my mate said Picotto came down to the dance floor after his set and started speaking away to him. Then Picotto double dropped in front of my mate and started dancing away!
:D

this one line is the key to answering your question, yes the media can turn shit something "good"
"good" for the DJ who is being promoted by them, a lot of the superstar DJs of today are ppl that can play the market and the media. Take Oakenfold for one, i must admit i do like some of his stuff, but i have heard a lot better :thumb: from DJs i've never heard of, or no one else has ever heard of. The reason being that they can't/haven't played the media aswell as oakenfold, its almost more of a business deal nowadays than "art"
i do like lizard tho :) but i can't say im a big fan of picotto tho, hes "ok" nothing special.

What Picotto plays/produces is Tech-Trance, its not real techno, most of it is structured like trance but has techno-ish percussion and everything. I personally like this stuff but its all about opinion! Mauro Picotto is one of the creators of tech-trance, not techno.
Sometimes all the different types of music get confusing, and I don't like pidgeonholing but thats really the best way to put it.

Picotto used to be trance back in the days of iguana etc. now he is pushin more towards the techno side of things but his stuff still bears sum hallmarks of his trance days. this may be why u think he plays tech trance. in a few more years he might be techno all together. techno is on a major comeback after all. even fergie is playin it on his radio sets frequently.

I don't see how techno can really cross over... I think that people like me who are into trance but are getting into techno stuff as well are as far as it will go. Its just not really something that will appeal to the teeny-bopper crowd. I could be wrong though

Mauro Picotto = techno for the teeny boppers. Why else would he play at Gatecrasher? A lot of the people that go to see Picotto @ Gatecrasher think of his music as "dark, dirty and hard trance". They don't know any better and don't know real techno.
As to local DJ's being beter than people like Oakenfold, totally agree. My mate was in a DJ competition on Friday night and he won the comp and seriously blew the roof off the place! The way his set flowed and his crowd manipulation was fantastic! Getting the crowd to start chanting stuff was very effective, as was stopping a record just as it was away to climax, then holding it back for ages to finally slam it in: club erupted when he did that! So his prize? A residency and getting to warm up for Paul Van Dyk!

Too many sheep, thats what it is aswell. People (who dont know) really think he's the only techno dj.. i got some mates who go down crasher and i've tried to get them to goto clubs like Orbit & Atomic Jam just to prove how naive they've been,, but nope they dont wanna know.. but they'll gladly go n watch picotto do 6 hours at gatecrasher????? i mean WTF does picottos tunes have some ultra low frequency thats brainwashing them or something?
As 4 ya mate, hope it goes well. Totally agree anyway, theres alot better djs.. but they dont get paid £30,000 an hour like sum.. oh yeah and as 4 oaky, hes playing literally the same set hes been playing since last year.. and even some tunes from year b4 that...... £100,000 for Global Gathering... WTF!

Yes i know whos these people are and i know they are totally underground, but never heard them simply coz i dont wanna.
I only hear picotto if i go to a festival and hes in the tent just b4 or after sum1 i wanted to listen to.
As to local DJ's being beter than people like Oakenfold, totally agree
Yer coz oakey has gone down hill, he used to be able to rock the place like no other DJ cud, but things change :)
But also a local DJ may just have enuff talent and be just as skilled on the decks as sum1 like oakey but simply hasnt had the chance to play to a proper audience or ben spotted yet.
My mate was in a DJ competition on Friday night and he won the comp and seriously blew the roof off the place!
Fair play to him, hes obviously got alot of talent and now has the chance that we only dream of :)

half of you that say he is a good dj have probably not even seen him!!! he is a joke, a sellout whatever you want to call him.
HE IS NOT TECHNO I REPEAT HE IS NOT TECHNO!!!!!!!!
ypu put him up against some one like dave clarke, ben sims, adam beyer or the surgeon and watch him shit himself.
he can only dj on 2 dex and seldom uses fx or his sampler (even though he has a pioneer in front of him)

if liebing stooped to picotto`s level i would probably stop listening to techno full stop as that is when i would realise it has gone too commercial.
you get all these crasher kids and beer boys saying they hate techno, but then will hear fergie play it and love it
i have had cybers try and tell me that ben sims tunes are hard trance WTF!!!
they haven`t got a clue what techno is and what it is about.
if they started coming to techno clubs then i would still go but the whole scene would then be ruined due to these idiots.
no need to get worried it will be garage or drum & bass next something like that, whatever is fashionable......just like all this electroclash stuff, dj hell & tiga etc.....what a load of shite, it`s not electro just pop music.
johno
22-09-2002, 06:31 PM
i wouldn`t abandon the scene as 99.9% of techno duj`s wouldn`t turn to producing cheese.
yeh the track is manipulated, you might be thinking of the adam beyer mix.
corvin dalek is hard trance.
i know what you mean though mate, us english have far too many names for music,
basically what it is, you have your genres and your sub genres.
for example
genres - techno, house, trance, garage, drum & bass etc
sub genres - dirty, funky, acid, techy, hard, minimal etc.
examples
hard house, funky house, minimal techno, acid techno.

Well no need to worry i wont invade ur techno scene, dont like it, even the "commercial" picotto.
I dont like fergie, i dont like picotto and never have done (except when picotto played his more trancier stuff :). Never heard dave clarke or any proper techno dj but i doubt id like it.
Whats peoples thoughts on Carl Cox? Hes not really underground as hes popular, more so than picotto, but i wudnt say he was commercial

Not heard him live yet, but from the sound of his cd's don't want to. But then cd's don't always do justice to a DJ.
