Hi, is this happening to anyone else or is it just me? (I recently has a virus so it might just be me).

Whenever I type www.thesite.org as usual, a netnames page opens instead. It also opens when I click on certain links on this site somewhere. If its not just me, will it be like this forever, or will things be back to normal soon?

Hey all,

Actually that's not exactly correct.

Although we do own www.thesite.org.uk we prefer to use www.thesite.org.for simplicity sake.

The reason you were getting the NEtnames holding page is that we've had a bit of a nightmare when our DNS server blew, in this order, : its motherboard, main hard disk and then its power supply.

Since our DNS was down we contacted Netnames to ask them to take over re-pointing our URL (www.thesite.org). They said they had but actually hadn't so you all got to see the lovely holding page.

It's sorted now so there shouldn't be any more problems! (fingers crossed!)

Hope that clarifies things a little.

Reg

If anyone was interested, it sounded like a DNS (Domain Name Server) issue where the records needed flushing...

The DNS server is like a telephone book with names and numbers in, or in technical terms domains and ip adresses. After you've typed in the address (ie. www.thesite.org) in to your browser it has to contact a domain server to get the address, it does this by reading the address backwards:

So in our example '.' first, which is root, followed by 'org' or organisation and then 'thesite', by this point the address is cross-referenced with an ip address (ie. thesite is 195.194.49.3) and is directed to the front page.

On from this then, you all know how most websites host the content on different sites (like ISPs) we originally the DNS address might point to the ISP and then the ISP directs it to your folder.

Now then, imagine doing an upload and messing these addresses up slightly, or uploading two different places for one IP address, the address book shows the same thing twice and things get confused...

Well thats the basic scenario, so you have to do a thing called 'DNS Flushing' which clears the records down and makes them all neat as well as clear any history of past (and now incorrect) addresses.

Obviously we could get into more depth and stuff, but thats just the jist of things :)

It happened to me once for a whole day a couple of weeks ago, but when I logged in the next day, all was OK !
Have not had problems since.
Thought I had lost the SITE forever !
