I like pretty much all type of music, appart from pop and country & western. Trance and rock have to be my favourites though.

This is just my opinion but I find it hard to understand how people can like two forms of music which are very different (eg trance and rock as someone mentioned above!)

How could you neglect to mention R&B???
To me that is the best genre because I find the lyrics mean something and I can relate to them.

R & B lyrics mean something? To quote Nelly, your apparent favourite artist,

In the club on the late night, feelin right
Lookin tryin to spot somethin real nice
Lookin for a little shorty I noticed so that I can take home
(I can take home)
She can be 18 (18) wit an attitude
or 19 kinda snotty actin real rude
But as long as you a thicky thicky thick girl you know that it's on

I's feelin' dat shit

Because I have wide musical taste, I'm not limited to just liking one type music. And the mood I'm in usually dictates what type of music I'll listen to at that time.

Does noones like two genres that are totally different?

Nelly is not my fav artist, just one I happen to fancy.
And I wouldn't consider him R&B, more commercial hip hop. When I said R&B I meant artists like R Kelly, Alicia Keys, Changing Faces and Profyle.

Fair enough, but you take my point? But to me, R & B seems almost as bad as gangsta rap - enormous egos getting bigger and writing stupid lyrics about "freakin'" their women.

Check out Alicia Keys, she really is good and her lyrics aren't stupid.

I do!
I totally agree with you Kiezo, my mood totally dictates what I listen to.

I like to listen to Billie Holliday but then I will listen to most indie/rock/pop/funk/disco/dance/classical (for anyone who's interested, Chopin and the majority of the Romantic movement).
It really annoys me when people are quick to slag off classical music as its occurrance led to the inspiration of many of the artists/bands/composers today.
Or for that matter, anyone who slags off a 'genre' of music without listening to it; "greebo" kids cussing pop, and garage kids slagging rock.

I don't have a particular favourite genre as I think they should all be valued. Some indie bands I love, some are dire. Some pop cheers me up, some makes me down. My point is, the genre is insignificant to me, there are few I dislike.
Garage doesn't really appeal as it makes me feel hollow, but I'll dance to it nonetheless.
Over complex textured, over happy music doen't do it for me either (yes that would be the horror that is 90s-00s ska-punk :D )

I like trance, drum n bass, RnB, some indie, some pop, some rock....why should a person only like one kind of music?

Bri-namite
11-06-2002, 12:09 AM
Mmmmm, I love pop :D

Dunno if its cheesy or not though, I mean Atomic Kitten and similar groups dont really fall into that category, I would class things like DJ Otzi and the Tweenies as cheesy.

I dont think its weird for people to like different types of music, I mean I like some of the Strokes stuff, althought thats kinda pop in a way.

What I cant understand is why people stop liking some music because the band's become "too commercial". Fair enough if their music style alters dramatically, but I've known people to stop listening to things, just because they've "sold out" or even because they got "too high in the charts". Music should be about liking the way it sounds, not about image.

Yer I do!

Must admit used to be totally into alternative/punk/metal/rock/indie but recently its changed to include trance and dance and like kiezo said, its whatever suits my mood at the time but alternative is still my fave stuff.

So yey, you're not alone! :D

I hate pop and I do have to listen to it! It is on the radio at work everyday, and I have to listen to it, and don't like it.

And what the hell is a greebo kid?i take it you mean people who listen to rock etc?

I like rock/punk/ska/indie/metal music and find that I can find a band within that genre that fits every mood I might be in.

Lorna

fistly, for the last time, I could not possibly fit every type of music in, I have already apologised for missing anything, there were only 10 spaces. I was certainly not dismissing certain types!
and, to crazysexycool, surely calling people "greebo" kids is slagging them off for their preference in music? Its not exactly the nicest term is it?
and I do believe people can like totally different kinds of music, as demonstrated already!

People are looking for new sounds, by the time a particular style or sound has reached the charts it's been heavily played on the underground scene which has been the birth place music since the 50's.

Music should be about liking the way it sounds, not about image.

I agree to a certain extent though different music styles will always carry different images with them. When I first got into dance music and raving back in 94 I was well into my hardcore sounds and there was an image that went with it. Loads of white gloves wistles, horns, flouresent jackets... etc. I still love those tunes but I'm more into my D&B now which also has an image with it. Music style and image go together because they're both such a big part of youth culture.

Does anyone hate it when a band they really like gets big and well known?

I really want my fave bands to get recognition, and for people to respect them, but I hate it when I see little kids wearing band merchadise to look cool. Music shouldn't be about wearing the t-shirts, it should be about the music!

Also, why do people think they have to dress a certain way in order to like a certain type of music?

You see all these little kids with baggy trousers and chains and you just *know* they're trying to put it accross to you that 'metal rules'!

And I wasn't accusing you in particular for dismissing certain music types, I was just fed up of all the stereotypes associated with certain "genres" of music.
I used the word in speech marks, as I do not agree with the stereotype. No offence was meant!
However, everyone seemed to know what I meant .
People who slag off something "just because" it's pop were who I was referring to, when Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and even good old Nirvana were "pop" as they were big in the charts (Nevermind selling how many copies).
:p

That wasn't aimed at you, sorry!
and yeah I was thinking about the definition of "pop" given that it means popular, so does that make say, Oasis pop? Or similar examples. But i feel a few people would get rather offended if you said their favourite band was pop! *ponders* :D

Personally I'd say Rhythm & Blues, Cool Jazz, Soul, Funk, Acid Jazz, Boogaloo, Ska, Reggae, Latin Jazz and Calypso. I don't think any of those options were included in the poll!

Does anyone else on here like vintage black music or is it just me?!

My tastes range too, and I hope that there aren't that many people who limit themselves to the one genre of music, it just isn't healthy. :D

OK so I better justify that with my tastes - I likes a bit of Jazz Soul and Blues, nothing like them for when your down of just want to chill out, R & B for those times I'm chilled out but want to groove at the same time :), pop for when I'm happy, the same goes for Rock and Classical. :D

I'll listen to most music really, the only stuff I really can't stand is cheesy pop  or stuff like Westlife and Atomic Kitten etc.

It all depends on my mood. At the moment I seem to be in to all things poppy. Mainly so I can go crazy and dance around my room like a mad girl. :D

I guess I will say that normally I like indie, followed by rock and sometimes pop. Ooh, and sometimes I like dance stuff.

Buggery. Ok, I like variety. Sozzles Lorna, can't pick just one. :p

lol, I thought id gone over the thread twice to make sure nobody had already, I must be going blind. Anyway, im a big fan of Russian Classical music, it seems to have much more energy, which is what I like.

I also like Rock, Nu-Metal, and a bit of everything really. I try not 2 stick to genres, just individual songs.
