Any one else into it??
I aint really caught any huge fish couple of big bream and the odd mid sized pike.
In my opinion it is one of the best ways to relax and just think.

Um...well this probably isn't the sort of response you want, but it's an opinion....
You didn't mention whether you 'FISH - fish' or whether you 'FLY - fish', but assuming it's the former, have you ever considered the barbarity of the sport? As a pretty much life-long veggie (who doesn't eat fish - damn, i hate those 'veggies' who do... ), it increasingly gets to me that fishermen find their sport 'relaxing'. Now, i don't want to get into an arugument about sentience here, and to what extent the fish can feel pain, blah blah blah.....
I mean, prove it's not hurting when you've got a hook through its head...
Would you happily run around a field with a hacksaw and drag some cows along the ground?

Hey, chill baby!
I'm not trying to force my opinions down your throat, just trying to make you question what you're doing. If I've touched a nerve...well, good.

For god's sake, is there nothing humans can do ? are you not aware that througout the animal world hunting goes on ? animals kill animals on a regular basis you know the fact were top of the food chain is besides the point someone has to be, if we weren't doing the killing, we'd be dying on a regular basis. My grandad used to go fly fishing alot, he loved it and brought home a lovely variety of meals, they are only bloody fish, most of which are breed for the specific purpose in the case of fly fishing, if not for fishers they would have NO life whatsoever. As for them that fish in rivers, can't see the point myself if you put the fish back, but i really don't see the problem in that scenario
You can't adopt this, 'musn't hurt animals ever attitude', its human nature to hunt, thats how our ancestors survived, they couldn't nip down tesco for their quorn burgers
ALthough we shouldn't abuse our evolutionary advantage over some animals, fish don't fall into that catergory nor do foxes, endangered species should be protected though

I'm perfectly aware of the extensive use of hunting throughout the world, either by us or within the animal kingdom. Yes, animals kill animals - it's a fact i don't (or can't) deny. And therefore the fact we're top of the food chain is TOTALLY beside the point, apart from the fact that we have the ability to make a CHOICE. A lion doesn't think (or, I find it hard to believe it ever would) "ach, i can't be arsed hunting today. Think i'll stick to this bit of grass instead". As humans we have that ability to have a preference.
You can't adopt this, 'musn't hurt animals ever attitude', its human nature to hunt, thats how our ancestors survived, they couldn't nip down tesco for their quorn burgers
And why not? I actually object quite strongly to this "You can't do this" attitude which is based on utter nonsense. It may have been human nature to hunt at some stage, but equally they couldn't nip down tesco for their meat burgers then. This isn't bloomin' neanderthal man we're talking here - it's rational people living in contemporary society who CAN and WILL live without farming meat. At least the animals who were killed by our ancestors had reasonable lives. Can you justify the poor quality lives of animals in farms all over this country in terms of your survival? I think not.
ALthough we shouldn't abuse our evolutionary advantage over some animals, fish don't fall into that catergory nor do foxes, endangered species should be protected though
And species who aren't endangered should be treated with absolutely no respect at all until they reach that status? What rubbish.
In any case, when I posted a reply to this thread, i made it clear i was only voicing an opinion, and am saddened to see that it's been met with total disrespect. Maybe it's because i'm not endangered at the moment.....

No, endangered species should be treated with extra care, i don't respect any animals as i do humans, we are superior to them why should we ?

So you don't think that life itself deserves respect? Isn't that rather a fascist view of the world?

Yes but i value some lives higher than others, humans been top of the list, to me a human is more important than a fish
I'm not saying animals are irrelevant, i hate to see animal cruelty, especially on dogs and cats etc......... but i draw the line at a point, the odd fish is neither hear or there, harsh i know, but honest ! As i said its human (well male) nature to hunt, to dominate, to rule all we can, thats why we have such things as war, there is no logic to it its just instinct We have far more important things to concern ourselves with than fishes rights. Cod are now classed as endangered, on that i think they should be left well alone for a while, nobody wants to see extinction of any species, but general fishing in a lake, full of specially breed fish for the purpose of fishing is fine in my book

Surely if you talk about fishing (as well as hunting) you're going to start a much larger arguement than intended??
I'm sorry honey - have been in the mood for a damn good rant this morning. I shall stop, and acknowledge that we can't win this one (even though I'm right..... ).

Sorry but I can't see the difference between fox hunting, hare coursing and fishing for 'fun'. All you have done is highlight the simliarities between what Beatnusson does and what the fox hunters do (except they kill the fox, he just puts the fish back so that he can torture it again..)
Your grandad had the right idea. Fish for food. THAT is real hunting, killing for the joy of seeing your catch on your plate later in the day.
personally I go angling - sea fishing to the uninformed...there is little better than landing a 20lb cod and then eating it..mmmm
I'm lucky enough to live on the South Coast so have easy access, I fish near Dungeness (NB alsways a good idea to fish near a nuclear power plant, easy to find the fish...its the glow you see ) Anyway, what I catch I eat, or give to next doors cat.
Fish for food, not for fun...

Read what I said...
If you eat the fox, then you are hunting for food which is an act of nature. Ditto if you eat the fish...
If you chase the fox for miles just to have your dogs rip it apart then you are doing little more than torturing an animal - if you did that to a domestic dog/cat you would be prosecuted. If you catch a fish, putting it through that pain just to throw it back, then again there is no point other than to satisfy a bloodlust or to prove that you are indeed the more stronger species...
Killing for fun is wrong, killing for food is natural...

I agree exactly with that. I guess some people will hate me for saying this, but I have been air rifle hunting before. I don't particularly agree with some hunting methods though, as a shotgun is messy and often injures the bird rather than killing it outright. A single pellet going through the head is much better, as they feel nothing.
