View Full Version : The Boat Race
On the 30th March, 2002, two crews of 9 will row the Thames. They are competing for a trophy, but the pride of two universities is at stake. No Varsity fixture matters more to the universities.
But what about everyone else?
Is the Boat Race relevant, and do people watch it? What do people think? Anachronistic left over from an elistist past - or modern elite sportsmen competing at the top of the tree?
I'm interested to hear your views, especially if there's anyone out there from Oxbridge universities...

The most hilarious thing is how the commentators introduce each eight by saying which school they went to - can you imagine them doing the same in the FA Cup Final?! It's a class thing, innit.

Nothing matters more to either of the universities?? What bollocks. I hate (and always will hate) the boatrace (a) because it's a ridiculous sport (b) in my long and drawn out experience of rowers in Cambridge they're usually wankers who make a conscious decision to get up at 5am and (c) it's an excuse for wankers to wear lycra.
I do apologise for the apparent lack of willingness to enter into a more intellectual debate on the issue, but frankly, i don't think it deserves it.

P.S. Had a date with one of the guys from the Cambridge boat one year - he was a tosser. Was vaguely attached to another one prior to that - he too was a tosser. Hmm. Sensing a theme.....
(Sorry to be so shallow and personal about the issue, but hey - it's an opinion...)
Ah, you're what's euphemistically called Blue Tac. I see.
Fair enough. When I said means more to the universities, I referred to those of a sporting nature, and the Varsity Games observers...
Are you at Cambridge, may I ask, and if so, college/subject? Anyone in favour of the race.
Emmmmmmm, boat race, not my cup of tea, but i have no problem with it. I never watch it but some do, lets face it its the crown jewels of grandstand each to there own, i wouldn't miss it if it was stopped, i wish they would sink more often
