Fans need someone to shout at when it all goes wrong, and where would managers be without a good old rant at the post-match talk......
However good they are people will always complain, they do a good job

It may seem strange but I think that refs mistakes genuinely make football more exciting, the game would be more boring if there was never any contoversy.
In the end it balances out and over the course of a season a team can expect to have as many dodgy decisions for them as against them.

Except Bolton Wanderers, who were relegated because a referee disallowed a perfectly good goal.
Referees are bad, and sadly seem to be getting worse. When a referee doesnt know what teh six-yard box is called but still qualifes, you know youve got problems. Cant live with them, cant live without them.

I'm probably going to get crucified for posting this.....
I'm looking at football from a rather objective view, I neither love nor hate the sport. I can't help thinking (and many sportsmen agree with me) that football seems to be one of the worse sports in some ways. There is a culture of fouling, and pretending to be fouled, arguing with the ref and bad behaviour. No referee will be right the whole time, and in most sports players will get on with it, but in football they will often argue till the cows go home. For instance, Ice hockey Is a far more violent game, but the players at least look like they respect the referee.

Of course it had nothing to do with the other 37 games they played that season.
It is easy to look at a single refereeing decision, but what about the defence when a goal was conceded or an attacker who misses an shot. Or the manager who selects the wrong player/tactics...
Referees are as fallible as any one else in the game. The only differnce is that they don't have another 10 mates on the pitch to cover for them...

thats true a referee has to keep hs eye on all 22 players the manager and try to see what the crowd is doing to ensure safe play! he is only human and only has two eyes.

Why are referees never fit? Not in the healthy sense!
Laugh at the girl invading the sports board with a pointless post!

Thanks KT. Thanks for reinforcing the stereotype of female football supporters. It's always nice to have our prejudices confirmed
You have a point though, Wendy Tomlin is no babe...
Oh and blokes still only watch women's footy on the off chance that there may be a shirt swapping incident. God help if we ever missed one...
Well i hate refs with a passion, i understand their neccessity, but a whole new approach is needed. If your bloke wants to be a ref, he is mentally disturbed, which explains his desire to be a ref i guess

Okay, so it does get highlighted that football does have it's fair share of fouling, acting, diving, bad behaviour, and arguing with the ref...
However is it not this way because as it is the most watched sport (i think) it is highlighted more than any other, especially by the british media?
But that doesn't mean to say that that's any excuse for all the crap that goes on (like acting, and diving etc).
Oh and by the way whoever criticed KT for making some passing comment about 'fit' refs, i think that that was said with tongue firmly in cheek and you should cut her some slack!

correct on both accounts, cheating happens in all sports, its just highlighted because of increased media/public attention
i would like to see the 10 yard rule for arguing imposed more often

I was cutting her some slack and playing along with her comment about all laughing at the girl on the sport forum. Read what I said again, note the smilies and the references to blokes watching women's footie.
Guess it touched a raw nerve. One of us needs to lighten up.
As for you other comments, I agree. The referee has one second to see any incident, and then make a judgment based on what he believes he saw. The media have hours/days to review the videop footage over and over again and from several different angles. Then sit and pontificate on what the ref should have done - often without actually understanding the rules. NB There is no intent distinction Mr Hansen...
I have yet to hear a manager criticise his defence or strikers over poor positioning, poor shooting, poor defending as much as they do a single refereeing decision.
Referring in often based on interpretation and on that basis you will get inconsistency and to be honest, I suspect that it what makes the game. Afterall most supporters would rather blame David Ellery for their team losing than accept that they lost becuase they were crap. And for proof see the Bolton comment earlier...
(PS I know that wasn't a Bolton supporter who posted it, but the point is the same)

Right that's it I am never venturing into this male dominated world again (unless it's about hockey, running or tennis!)

Yes, more of it is shown than other sports, so it gets more attention, but the players are still far worse than in virtually any other sport. There is a whole culture of arguing with the ref, diving cheating etc. Some players are more guilty than others of course, but the culture is definatly there. Pick a video of almost any football match, and watch it. Every time someone takes a dive, argues with the ref, gets pissed off with the ref's decision, swears at a lineman, or claims the ball is theirs when it rolls off, put a tick on a piece of paper. Now do that with another sport.
See the difference?

Yes thank you for that lecture into the bad world of football. I have learned from it, and will never make the same mistake again.
I bow down to your superior knowledge.

There is a whole culture of arguing with the ref, diving cheating etc. This is one of the reasons why football is exciting and other sports are shit
