View Full Version : bar work
this is probably a really sad post, but in a couple of years I was thinking of going over to some where in europe for about a year - and while I was there just getting bar work or something... Is this possible? and will it keep me going so taht i canhave a bit of fun in the meantime, while i'm there?

Yeah you can work in any EU country but check any restrictions first. I worked in a hotel in Spain on the bar when I was 15, that was cash in hand though, there's a lot more "unofficial" jobs in certain parts of Europe. There will always be bar jobs in tourist areas though. Just don't be a club rep, have you seen the terrible people on ITV's programme?

hi amz, well i lived and worked in amsterdam, holland for quite a while. u need a work permit (a 'sofi number') but this is easy to get, i didn't sort anything out before i went...i just went & took my passport to an office just outside the city and they sorted me out a permit within a hour or so. i think you can work anywhere in the EU on the same basis. i'd definitely recommend living/working in amsterdam - it's so easy to get work in the tourist industry (i was chambermaiding and flyering but there's loads of bar work, shop work etc) - just walk around and go into bars, coffeeshops, hostels, hotels etc and ask if they need anyone, you'll have no problem finding something within a few days. there are obviously other, better paid jobs about but you often have to speak some dutch for these. i only got paid about £3.50 an hour, which is average for work in the tourist industry, but that was enough for me to live on (i lived in a houseboat on one of the canals).
i had a fab time, it's increadibly easy to meet people as everyone speaks such good english. besides amsterdam is beautiful, and the coffeeshops and all they entail were a big bonus for me!
Anyway, wherever you go, have a great time!

also to add that there are lots of websites & organisations which help you find work placements abroad in advance. i remember looking at quite a few before i moved to holland (although in the end i decided to wing it and sort myself out when i got there). but do search the internet, there are people who will help you find work and accommodation wherever you decide to go. i just typed in 'work abroad' and similar phrases on google, searched uk sites and it came up with shit loads of stuff. <IMG alt="image" SRC="wink.gif" border="0">
