View Full Version : When is a thread dead?

What kills a thread? Time or lack of posts?

For example...

I can find a thread on the bottom of the 3rd page of Anything Goes with a last post date of 09-05-2002 (5 days ago)

I can find a thread on the bottom of the 3rd page of Travel from 22-09-2001

So does a thread die after it passes a certain page on the index of threads things or after a period of time? When is it acceptable to bring up and old topic?

What I'm trying to get across is that forums are busier than others. A week in Anything Goes and Sex is along time, whereas in Travel, Action and Volunteering and sometimes Sport a week makes little difference.

I think it depends on the type of thread too...

If it's in Anything Goes and is just someone introducing themselves to the boards, or someone saying that it's their birthday then the thread only has a shelf-life of a day. It's annoying if a thread is resurrected only for a two word post like "Happy Birthday", or "Hello, Welcome...".

However, if the thread is more interesting, then it lasts longer. Most threads in Politics last a long time because people have a lot to say on the whole, and therefore it doesn't matter if the responses are instantaneous, or take a couple of days to roll in...

There's no fixed 'rule', but those are my feelings <IMG SRC="smile.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

A thread's dead when it's no longer relevant surely??
