Guys i need some help. I am living in halls at the mo and everything has been going great... that is until now. I live in a flat with 6 other girls and recently things have started to go missing. First little things like orange juice and ham. But now whole bottles of things, loaves of bread, chocolate and alcohol are disappearing to.
We have narrowed it down to 1 girl in the flat (it wasn't hard!) but what do we do?
1)confront her and risk living the rest of the year with her never speaking to us
2)Leave it and end up with no food at all
3)set a trap to catch her in the act
4)(and we really don't want it to come to this) Inform the hall administrator that she is stealing from us
You may all think this is petty but on a student budget we just can't afford to lose things.
WHAT DO WE DO?????

Someone in my flat put eggs in my bed last night, an ass kicking will be administered when the culprit is found !!
Anyway on a more practical level, I would have a quiet word with her, I wouldnt all go charging in together, its gonna make her feel like shit and that the whole flat hates her. If you just say something like "listen, im pretty sure its you nicking all our stuff, can you stop because its not really fair", or words to that effect. Be firm, but nice.Be gentle yet tough.
Hope things work out.

I'd go for a trap of some description. How about "dummy" bread with permanent dye or something? Seriously tho, a quiet word is probly enough... Small scale theft (i.e. a couple of slices of bread / bit of milk) is ok, but incidents like last fucking friday when some FUCKER stole HALF MY LOAF OF BREAD in ONE MORNING.. gr... <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">
Anyone else at Manchester uni?

Call a group meeting. Say it's becoming an issue without pointing the finger. Get those little coloured stickers to put on your stuff. Different colours for each person. Make it clear that it wont be tolerated any more and if it happens again, the administrator guy will be told. If she's a theif who gives a crap if you don't speak for the rest of the year! If she's genuinely starving tell her she can get beans and tinned tomatoes for 7p from all the wee crappy supermarkets. (OOh, I'm callous)

I had the same prob at uni - we confronted the theif and suggested that if she didnt have food or wanted to borrow that she at least asked first - she never did it again... and never asked either....
oh and we didnt really fall out..
hope you get it sorted its a pain in the arse coming home to food etc missing

Thanx for all the tips. We tried talking to her in just 1 on 1 but she always pointed the finger at someone else. We tried labels but it didn't work as she still stole things. We then had a group meeting to discuss it and things looked promising for a few days then it started up again
So in desperation we put some fairy liquid, (a very small amount!! ) in with some orange juice and left it in the fridge as bait. Bingo!! She drank so!! I came into the kitchen as she was spitting down the sink and i saw the carton next to her. She didn't see me though
Since then all food in our flat has been safe, nothing has gone missing and she is walking around with a guilty look on her face and being nice to every one!!!!!!!!!
Thanx again guys you've given this story a happy ending!!!!!!!!!!1

Anyhow its an all girls flat so u could be guaranteed that there would be a queue 4 the loo! Plus we ration toilet roll so that would have been a bad idea!!!!
