According to the Guardian:
"Community leaders have attacked William Hague for his comments on the Macpherson report and the death of Damilola Taylor. Gurbux Singh, the chairman of the commission for racial equality, said Mr Hague's intervention had not been helpful, while the Bishop of Southwark accused the Tory leader of reneging on a commitment to refrain from making political capital out of the Macpherson report into the murder of Stephen Lawrence."

The parents have already complained about the death being used as "a political football".

Has the whole situation backfired on William Hague?

Very much so...he tried to turn a human affairs news story into a political stunt. He should know that since he has very little control over the proceedings, things are not likely to work out.

Anyway, when in showbiz, never work with kids or animals.
