How long in advance do I need to tell various organisations that I'm moving?
I'm holding off telling virgin and BT until I know where I'm living so I can transfer my services
Already told the people I rent my house
What about things like-
electricity
water
DVLA for my car and drivers licence
Insurance company (for my car)
Work?
Bank & credit card peoples
:chin: anyone else?

Make sure you get a final electricity bill from Scottish Power, I don't know if you have already paid but insist on them sending you a paper bill which shows a balance of nil. If you can take a meter reading when you leave do so, and write it down.
Electricity queries have a nasty habit of coming back from the dead to haunt you. I know what you've been through with it so make sure you cover your arse and dont just take Scottish Powers word.
Good luck. :thumb:

My job sorta requires me to have a passport ;) why do I need to tell the passport people though? Don't have gas or catalogues :)
Cal: I sorted my probs out with scottishpower thanks to your help  apparently I don't use my electricity :D
Id go to the bank about a week before you move, because that way if you change your address, there might be a bit of post off them still in the process of coming to your old house.
And as soon as you change your address with the bank/credit cards, when you go online to do shopping, you would have to use your new address etc for validation.

On a side note, you can go to the post office and have all your mail re-directed for 2 months after you move (for £20 I think) so if you forget/ don't inform any companies in time the mail will still be sent on. See here http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po/jump2?catId=63800711&mediaId=19100252
You can get the address on your driving license changed through the DVLA website and if you enter your passport details you don't need to send it off.
I also don't understand why you would have to inform passport people?

I have moved twice while being with Virgin - first time as NTL, second time, actually as NTL too. Give them a couple of weeks notice and they'll let you chose your installation/transfer date.

rachie are you with virgin non cable e.g. down your bt phone line?
if you are, just give the home movers dept a ring on 0846 045 0709 option 3 a week or two beforehand telling em when you want to be moved in to your new place and they should be able to take over from there

tried pm'ing you but your box is full :p
if you have a st330 modem and a broadband only plan its unlikely you can get wireless for free unless you upgrade your package to include calls
any more questions, just drop me a pm :)

I didn't expect to get it for free, was thinking I'd have to buy the router or something. I don't really understand the whole wireless thing :p

lol, that fine
just make sure you empty your box so i can pm you :p
if you're gonna buy a router yourself, try and get a netgear dg834g adsl wireless modem router cos its supported by VM and they will be able to help you if you ever need to call tech support
you can get them from the VM website or any good pc store

Tesco Clubcard/Nectar points if you have them, I always forget that when I move!
For people that move a round a lot it's also worth looking at these new Wireless Modems that use 3G - 3 mobile have them on PAYG you pay like £50 for the modem and then buy a top up voucher - say £15 which lasts for 30 days / 3GB which ever comes sooner.
If believe you can also use it abroad wherever there is a 3 Mobile sister network - like Ireland, Italy, Hong Kong, etc but not too sure about that bit.

Just checked BT's website - it seems I'll have to pay £125 AGAIN as a connection charge

Why? Surely the would already be a line installed. If not tell them to get fucked and get cable installed instead. :thumb:

There is a line installed but because its another new build it isn't connected. Bunch of cocking thieves!
Cable you say? *goes to investigate*
