What do you think is the worst newspaper in the country?

Disillusioned

By 'worst' most people will assume editorial line they disagree with the most.

 The Sport... does anybody buy it except 12 year old schoolboys?

But since The Star does actually pretend to be a newspaper (whereas the Sport doesn't) I think it's the worst. The People is also especially shit.

Not necessarily. They might vote for the Express out of pity. Actually, that would be the opposite of pity, wouldn't it. Just to shit on them even more. I'm tempted to vote for the Express just for that god-awful advert. Or The Sun because of Frank Lampard's Super Goals advert. Or The Telegraph because it's so hard to open on a train.

The Daily Mail, but only because it hates me.

I voted The Daily Mail. I'm no fan of the Murdoch press but the Daily Mail is just shocking.

Express.

Same bullshit stories about Diana for the last 10 years, and more recently Madeleine McCann. At least the other tabloids vary their front page stories once in a while.

The Express must cost fuck all to make. They don't need any proper reporters. They just rehash the same shit with a different twist every single day - any bastard could do it. I can understand why some people might read some of the other tabloids, no matter how awful they are, but when I see someone reading The Express I want to ask them why they bother. There's about as much 'story' in it as there is on there back of a pot noodle.

I have a particular dislike for the Mail, but the Star just pipped it to the post simply for publishing complete tripe on their front page all the time (I have to admit to never having opened one).

The Mail. Pure evil straight from hell.

The likes of the Scum and the Express are just as odious, but the Mail wins because it actually portrays itself as a decent, respectable newspaper and it is read by people who claim to be the same.

The Sun, Star, Sport etc are all shit, and not REALLY newspapers. For the worst that pretends to be a serious news source, while just biased crap propaganda for the BNP, it HAS to be The Mail.

That was pretty much my reasoning. The Sun, The Mirror and The Star would be up there if they took themselves seriously and pretended to be such, but as it is, I don't know a single Sun reader who takes it seriously.

 My reasoning too. As much as I berate someone I know who reads the Sun, as he points out at least they know they're bollocks and don't try and ptetend otherwise, and the bollocks is clear for all to see.

I'd put The Express in that bracket as well.

The tired old chestnuts about tabloids being evil and bad are being brought out to play. If the likes of Aladdin had their way, our newspapers would be exactly the same as the ones from the 1850s - long, boring broadsheets with parliamentary reports stretching to 50,000 words that nobody would read.

If tabloids are as bad as most of you like to claim, how come they are so much more popular than the traditional broadsheet newspapers? And on a more personal note, why do you half of you always know what's in the tabloids despite apparently loathing them so much?

Good points ...the same people who deride the tabloids seem to support the shite they
are told about the royals and know an awful lot about the doings of celebs ...and i can't understand how you can make statements about papers you presumably haven't read on a regular basis. There is of course always an element of intelectual snobbery in such questions and answers as these.

Read the Guardian J ...not just a news paper!

Because people like trashy sensationalist crap is why they are so popular.

I read them if someone's left a copy on the train/tube for the entertainment value.

Not hard to know what's in the tabloids if you even take a passing glance at the front page or people talking about what's "newsworthy" lately.

The only newspapers I read are The Sun - because I like the sport pages and the horoscopes, the weekly news in my area and The Sunday Times.

When I occasionally read fully through The Sun I don't take anything seriously it's more like entertainment. Apparently in The Sun HQ there's a big sign or statue or something saying, 'Don't ever let the truth get in the way of a good story' which probably just about sums them up.

I don't know why some papers call themselves newspapers because they print the same Diana/ Madeline McCan stuff over and over.

Good points ...the same people who deride the tabloids seem to support the shite they
are told about the royals

Some tabloids have an agenda against the royals, others are generally supportive, others indifferent. Don't know what you are referring to frankly.

and know an awful lot about the doings of celebs ...and i can't understand how you can make statements about papers you presumably haven't read on a regular basis. There is of course always an element of intelectual snobbery in such questions and answers as these. Nowadays it's not difficult to find out what's in the papers without reading them is it? Most people who don't like tabloids don't generally care about who's shagging whom or what colour Rooney's kitchen is.

But the stories that give the tabloids their bad reputation go well beyond their own pages. They get discussed on message forums. They are reported on other newspapers or commented about on TV. I don't need to buy or read the Mail every day to be aware of their twisted reporting and agenda against certain groups. Whenever one such piece appears word gets out quickly enough.

It is actually our duty to challenge and expose any stories that are malicious lies with ulterior motives, rather than just shrug our shoulders and let them poison the minds of their readers further and to let them believe what those rags claim is the truth.

It's not the size that bothers me, or the more informal style of reporting. It's the nasty garbage most of them happen to peddle. Well, millions of people buy tabloid newspapers every single day - I'd be very interested to know how many of them think it's "nasty garbage" that's being "peddled". And if so, why do these millions of people keep buying them? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer :)As I've said before, if The Guardian was your wife, the Daily Mail would be your mistress. I stand by that. :p

Again, as stated, millions of people buy McDonalds and stuff like turkey twizzlers everyday, just because it's popular doesn't make it better.

And if so, why do these millions of people keep buying them? In the case of the Scum, because it is entertainment. Because it is light, funny reading. Because of the tits, Page 3, football, gossip and funny stories. I don't really think many people who read the S*n do so for the politics of the paper, or even agree with them.

The Mail is a different story however- which is why is a far more dangerous and detestable paper. It would never put tits on page three or have a sleezy agenda, and actually pretends it is a morally right, decent newspaper. Most of their readers are thus probably unaware of the garbage that's being fed to them. They probably believe every scaremongering story they are told about immigrants, gypsies, Muslims, foreigners and every other group that find itself the target of of the Rothermere family, when time after time such stories are exposed as slurs and lies.

If the Mail really is the voice of Middle England, then Middle England is a truly unpleasant place I would not want setting foot on.

I think the Mail is the worst, I've refused to read it for years but from what people say it hasn't improved. I can't think of any newspaper that I would actually pay for, because they're all biased, negative and often pointless.

I find reading the Mail quite cathartic every now and then, its good for the system to get very angry once in a while. Its a foul paper which basically blames those darkies for all the problems since the end of Empire.

I voted for the Daily Record. If I could have voted for two, I would have put one in for the Mirror as well since they are virtually the same paper, spouting the same pessimistic left-wing tripe. I can't stand to read either of them. I have yet to find the perfect Newspaper, but these pair make me want to slit my wrists.

The Times, The Guardian, Independant, Telegraph and Herald are OK, but have no decent cartoons (bar Matt in the Telegraph, which is only one panel in a paper the size of a paving slab).
The Express has Dilbert (cartoon) and Hickey (humerous column) but won't shut up about Diana.
The Sun and Star are just porn.
The Mail, I won't bother repeating what everyone else has said.

Can we not have a newspaper that uses big words *and* has cartoons and funny stuff without taking an extreme editorial line?

Times - No opinion on this one. It's just something that reports a bit of news, isn't it?
Telegraph - Called the Torygraph by a few people apparently. i've not really read this, so I can't really judge.
Guardian - Is ok I guess.
Independent - As above, but gets a tad too preachy for my liking.
FT - Yawn......
Sun - Alright for a laugh. Don't read it expecting any quality news or anything.
Mirror - Umm..... no opinion. Even though I read this regularly,a nd we know it's just another tabloid that happens to be a bit less of a laugh than The Sun.
Star - The Sun's poor relation. Nothing more.....
Sport - Makes no attempt to tell us what's going on in the world and indocrinate us. Just gets the jugs out and that's it, which is fair enough I guess, if you're a divorced truck driver or something. Fiar play to them...
Mail - I don't need to comment on this, do I? LESBIAN IMMIGRANTS SPREAD AIDS AND LOWER HOUSE PRICES.
Express - DIANA WAS MURDERED BY PRINCE PHILIP IN A FIAT UNO!!!
Scotsman - No opinion.
Herald - Ditto.
Daily Record - Ditto.
NOTW - Screws Of The World more like.
People - Low-rent Sunday boredom garbage which seems to report on the same sort of bullshit as NOTW. Must have a readership as big as the elephant population of Luxembourg.
Observer - Isn't this The Grauniad on a Sunday with a different name?
Andrex - Feels much better on a sore backside after a painful pasage than any of the above. Just stick to that.
