Sooo me and my boyfriend have recently bought a house, which we got for £120,000 in the end which i thought was pretty bargain for what/where it is etc and then i got talking to an old friend who's also buying one but in yourkshire, where a 3 bed terrace is only costing her £85k, so i couldn;t believe it, what a baragin i didn't realise houses that cheap actually still exsisted in places! On the other hand i know they are crazy high around London.
Soooo i was just curious really as to what sort of things people got for their money where they live if they have bought a hoouse and what not?
For me we have just bought it this year, it's a 2 bed semi with a drive, on a cul - de sac in a fairly big village a few miles from loughborough and we got it for £120k, 5 thousand under the asking price and around here it seems the cheapest 2 bed place's going are flats for about £110,000.

We're looking to buy next year in either Pontypridd or Aberdare, looking to spend up to £90k in pontypridd and £80k in Aberdare.
My friend just bought an old farmhouse, 100 years old with period features and beautifully done up in Ystradgynlais for £110k
Wales is cheap! If you want to live in the middle of nowhere! Which is lucky for me cos I do!

I bought a 3 bedroomed terrace house for £250k 4 years ago - it needed a lot of work - it is now worth more than double that - however the next size house up is way out of my reach in the area where i live (which is a nice area in inner london) -a decent sized 4 bedroomed terraced or semi detatched starts at around £850.
We bought our first flat in 2000 for £70k and almost doubled our money on that in just over 3 years as well....

For my hometown, I'm looking at starting prices of £120,250+ for a one bedroom flat. Which on my qualifying wage of £18k ish is totally out of reach.
Who knows, in 2.5yrs when I actually qualify, I might be able to afford a shed somewhere ;)
Hopefully, OH and should still be together then, and hopefully he can buy his flat!!

My house in Leeds (that I now can't afford to live in - hurrah!) is worth something in the region of £140,000. Maybe a smidge less. It's a 2 bed ex-council semi.
Down here in Barnsley, that'd buy you a 3 bed semi in a fairly nice area, or a 4 bed in an average/not ideal area.

£120k would get you a 3 bed semi or even detached round here.
for £250k you could get 5 beds easy, for £350k you'd be looking at a swimming pool and acres of land.
property is cheap round here, but wages are also low. Average wage round this area is around £18k.
terraces in the poorer areas of town are usually <£50k, some even as cheap as £30k are still around. you wouldnt wanna live there tho

Hey
My bloke has just brought us a house and we are now waiting for it all to go through. It is a 2 bed end terrace in Chelmsford, Essex. Its a refurbished victorian so we won't have to do anything with it other than put our own stamp on it.
It was on the market for £220,000 and we got it for £215,000. My blokes 1 bed flat went for £145,000. As Chelmsford is a commuting town for London, the prices keep going up.
Unfortunately areas that would have a 3 bed for £84,000 probably have low wages to match

Me and my other half brought our house a year ago. We have a 3 bed semi, with a drive and garage and paid £134,000. I love my house!!
2 bed city centre apartment for £120k in Leeds the way things are going. Probably a decent 2/3 bed semi in a decent area.

I rent at the moment, but one of the flat/apartments in our little block thing is up for sale for £175,000, but I imagine ours would be somewhere around £200,000 as theirs is a ground floor and they have much less space than us from looking at the floor plan - because ours is on the top floor we have an upstairs bedroom whereas they have everything in the ground space of the rest of our flat! That's for a 2-bed flat in Oxford. Nice flats but the estate I'm on is a shithole which brings the price down considerably-if we lived in the same type of house but not in the estate we're in then our rent would be about £100 per month more.

I bought a 3 bed ex council terraced for £141k about 8 months ago, has needed quite a lot of work though. A very similar house to mine on the same road is on for £170k at the moment.

We sold my husbands flat for £155k after he bought it 7 years previously for £54k!
We then bought our house 15 months ago for £225k which is a 4 bedroom (loft conversion) mid terrace with a driveway and gated access to the garden. We have knocked through the lounge/dining room and added a conservatory to create a fantastic downstairs space.
Not sure how much it is worth now but well over the £250k mark...
You might be able to buy more house for your money up north but you will never be able to move back down south again!

The 3 bed terrace house I rented in London was sold as I was leaving for £455k. Which is a shit load considering it had mice and was next to the fucking noisy tube. Everytime the tube went by, I couldn't hear the TV or my CD would jump with the vibrations.
£455k in Jesmond would buy you a big house in one of the leafiest parts of Newcastle. If you wanna move right out in the suburbs then it could buy you a huge house with swimming pool and a butler :p
Guess Kirsty & Phil are right though, its location, location, location.

Our house was £110K when we bought it, a 2-bed mid-terrace. I paid an £8k deposit and it's worth approx £120k now.
