The fact you're drunk makes it worse - did you break it and then walk off? That's worse than owning up...

But my mum broke a window deliberately and got an informal telling off and didn't have to pay for it... so it does depend. If you say it was an accident and you're willing to pay for it or something maybe you'll be ok. I dunno. I would ask a legal person if you're worried. Or Kermit, he's clued up on legal things.

Who's window did you smash?

Can't you just directly contact them and offer to replace the glass? (Although if it's a large plate window from a shop then it may cost in excess of £1000+)

the cost shouldnt really come into it, if you broke it you should be made to pay for it.

Even if they had insurance, they should have to claim on it, if someone ie the police know who did it. They would of course have to pay an excess fee.

If it was a genuine accident, then there is every possibility that you will be allowed to pay for the damage and avoid a criminal record, it's something we actively encourage. You learn your lesson without long-term problems and the person with the smashed window gets it fixed.

But it depends on how you are with the cops when you see them, it's an option they could give you, but it's unofficial and it's up to them how they proceed.

i have to pay for the damage, and the property owner will contact me and let me know

the authorities will decide if i get community service (they said its highly unlikely because its my first time and i've agreed to pay) and an extra fine, which won't be more than 100 euro

i am "on the system" but i dont think i actually got arrested (no prints or photos taken) so i dont think i actually have a criminal record...

wait and see how much it costs, but it coulda been worse
