I was all prepaired to buy a 360 until i read reviews about problems (red ring of death). This got me considering the PS3 more, so which ones do people think is better.. What experiences have people had with the systems?

Are the newer 360's that have been released more reliable than the older versions? is there less chance of the red ring of death. I have also heard that the 360's are prone to scratching disks?

I think I'd go for 360 is I was going next gen again - online gameplay is so important these days and the simple fact is that far more people have a 360 and live works better than the PS3 alternative. So better to go with the crowd.

ive been having this same debate with myself, having only played the 360. i hear the PS3 online service is free though compared to the 360's subscriptions, is this true? do we think its just a reflection of the quality (you pay for what you get etc) ?

im leaning towards grabbing a 360 (elite model if i can find one, just got a full hd telly so wanna make use of the hdmi cable-age....the pro only comes with a composite HD cable right?) when the prices come down.

360 whips ps3 all over the shop in my opinion.
Ps3 hasnt got any real decent games and from all Ive heard of their online system it cant even scratch live (despite its fuckups:D ).
Go with the box.

Obviously alot of people have 360s on this forum (judging from the amount of 360 related threads) so the opinion is going to be severely skewed by owners, fanboys and such. Seeing as this is a subject that I'm very interested in (seeing as I too have been mulling over which to buy for some time) then I'll offer a flipside to what seems to be the consensus on this board.

I haven't bought either yet, but I've played both (mostly 360 because my brother has one). Right now Xbox is better in terms of titles, but PS3 reportedly has a huge amount of exclusive titles lined up for the near future, including Metal Gear Solid 4, which like its predecessors will probably be one of the best games on the market. If you're into games like the Final Fantasy series, these are Playstation exclusives as well. Xbox's flagship exclusive title is Halo. Now, is it just me or is Halo the most over-rated game ever? It's OK but I just don't think it's that good. The single player compaign was finishable in 1 day and I know multiplayer offers much more scope, but give me COD 4 instead anyday.

Also in PS3's favour is that Blu-ray is winning the battle with HD DVD, with many of the big film production companies recently siding with their technology (with more reportedly ready to follow). You might want to take that into consideration as the tide seems to be turning in Sony's favour in this respect. Blu-ray has done well because whilst the technology is superior to HD-DVD, that was never going to guarantee its success (e.g. Betamax vs VHS). The difference in the technologies probably isn't that great but when the big production companies start siding with one technology, then you should probably take notice.

If you'd asked this question a year ago, many people (including myself) would probably have recommended Xbox because of its affordable price. However, now the PS3 is just as affordable as the Xbox, and the bonus of a blu-ray player, means it's a pretty good option economically. In Xbox's favour, they currently have a much better online option with Xbox Live, due to the amount of users. However, with increasing PS3 sales due to the price drop, it probably won't be long until their online community grows dramatically. The PS3 online option doesn't have a subscription fee either, unlike Xbox Live.

Finally, 360s do seem to be really unreliable with the Red Ring Of Death. This seems to be really hit or miss with half the owners being fine and half the owners suffering, sometimes more than once (like my brother). Certainly the more hardcore gamers seem to be most at risk, due to more use, which is a shame. Maybe the new Xbox consoles aren't as bad, but I've seen no conclusive proof. Some guy on Amazon reviews did a heat test with an Elite and found it to produce similar heat to a regular console so I wouldn't be too convinced. Another point that really brings down the Xbox is the amount of fucking NOISE it makes. It constantly sounds like a shitty old desktop computer trying to boot up. Great way to ruin a cinematic cut scene (or a good movie) hearing it go into fan overload. By comparison, the PS3 is silent as a mouse and seems to run much smoother.

Still, having said all this, Xbox is still a great console and you won't be too disappointed (until it breaks down at least ;)). I'm starting to lean more and more towards PS3 though, and I'm glad I've bided my time because for a while I was set on a Xbox. There's still one thing that nags at me though - the planned Gears of War sequels. Now that is an exclusive title Xbox can be really proud of. I might end up buying a PS3, but cash permitting in the future, I'd buy an Xbox just for that.

Hope this adds to the debate. :)

im a 360 owner and love it, but i'll be getting a PS3 at some point this year, to be honest the exclusives on either console dont really appeal to me.

the bluray player is a bonus seen as it looks like HD-DVD is gonna die on its arse soon enough.

the pluses are xbox live, its far better that the PS3 online thing from what i've seen.

also a lot of games seem to be slightly better on the 360, but maybe thats because developers have been working longer on that format, mainly PES2008, Assasins Creed and COD4 stand out which ive played on both formats and the 360 versions are far better.

as apparently is GTA4 which is gonna have exclusive content.

Never played a PS3. I have a 360 though and I would def recommend one.

In terms of exclusive games, apparently that might be going out the window soon... it costs them too much money to be exclusive. There is already promising talk of the new Final Fantasy coming out on the 360 as well as the PS3.

They are unreliable tho, I have seen a couple go down (although some had been tampered with)
The newer ones do actually have a 3rd heat sink and better stock fans so in theory they should be more reliable. Also Microsoft do offer an extended 3 year warranty to people it happens too.

Bottom line for me is that I'm cheap and cant be bothered to keep buying games so I flashed my 360. PS3's cant be done yet.

I own both a 360 & PS3.

I sat down and compared their features not long after getting my PS3 because I was feeling very disappointed with it As it is I don't use it at the moment and traded all but one of the games when my 360 came back from repair.

When it comes right down to what the console is actually for, gaming, the Xbox 360 wins hands down.. for now. Xbox Live absolutely walks all over the PSN which is the Sony alternative. The way the whole Xbox Live works is fantastic compared to the lacklustre way in which the PS3's PSN works.

You can access your friends list, start voice / video chats with friends, view previously played players, you can access your messages and send more, you can press the guide button and access all this during gameplay, something the PS3 cannot do and won't be able to do until Home comes out, and there is no guarantee from what I have read that this will actually happen. Here's an example that I find astounding. Sony let you send friend's messages from the XMB, Cross Media Bar, that's fine, my friend sends me a message and I'm in the middle of a game of say COD4 online, to read that message and the only way to read that message is to exit the game completely and go to my Inbox where I can then reply.

They leave it to developers to include in game chat and messaging and so forth and they mostly just don't bother which results in a really crap service for gamers. It's just not convenient when you are trying to play a game and chat to a friend. At least on the 360 you can pause your game press the guide button click a friends name and send them a message before going back to your game and if you need to reply you just pause it again.

Graphically there is some differences but games like COD4 are EXACTLY the same on both consoles. I felt Pro Evo 08 felt better playing on the ps3 but i play the 360 version due to my masterleague being on there and putting a lot of time into it.

Future releases, as Luckystrike said, there are a lot of PS3 exclusives coming out this year, I believe more than the Xbox has ? This year has the potential to be the year of the PS3 if Sony do it right. Again another plus point is the Blu Ray player, a very big advantage considering the price of Blu Ray players stand alone.

What might be a defining factor is the cost of the games, because the 360 has been out longer the games have come down by a huge amount, pre owned I've talking here although new releases can be found for good deals if you shop about.

With the PS3 games are far too expensive and will be for a while yet, pre owned game value is an absolute joke, Strangehold for example - £17.99 on 360 pre owned, PS3 - £29.99. That was in my local GAME store. There is a big gap in the prices, regardless of the differences between the platforms they are played on.

My conclusion is that I was patient I held off buying a PS3 until the price came down then I got the 40GB console. I thought the PS3 was going to be something much better than it turned out to be, it really is a big let down. Everytime I switch it on I feel bored. Sure I can access a friends list and send a message, start a chat, it has access to a previously played players list but it only works if the game developer actually makes sure their game works with it.

The PSN market place is a shambles and that's before you compare it to the Xbox Live market place. Comparing the online aspects of gaming results in one defining conclusion, the 360 wins hands down, even if you do have to fork out another £40 per year subscription to Xbox Live. PSN might be free but I think it suffers for that, and Sony's lack of what feels like not wanting to compete on that front.

My advice, get a 360 it wins hands down for the time being. I feel you get more out of it for you're money than the PS3 can give in return.

Luckystrike, I read on another forum that apparently Developers might start making games for the PS3 first then port them to the 360 as they are start to find developing getting easier as time goes on and because it's an easier way to do it for them, whereas at the moment they make a game for the 360 then have to port it over to the PS3.

Although as many many people have said, If Infinity Ward can turn out a game like COD4 on both platforms and say they found it easy to do, every other developer should learn from it.

i think the blu-ray Vs. hd-dvd arguement is a little weak. if your someone who wants to adopt either format for your film watching then stand alone players are better than any console if your serious about your film.

im thinkin 360 for now.......when prices drop below £300....

Yea sure, if you've got an extra £300 to throw around like that for something that will do effectively the same job, then go for it! Seems a bit ridiculous though when you can get a whole games console thrown into the deal for exactly the same price.

And then there's the possibility that once games producers get to grips with the technology, some of the more ambitious ones may decide that only blu-ray caters to their needs. Probably won't happen for a while though. Anyway, if you've got the extra money to spend on a stand alone player, you should just buy both both consoles instead - sorted :D.

Both consoles are already retailing for less than £300.

http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/3356849/Xbox-360-Elite-Console/Product.html

£279 there

http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/659411/Xbox-360-Premium-Console/Product.html

£249 if you went for a premium which i think is more than enough unless you are dead set on paying MS's costs for the downloadable HD movies, which im not.

and on the HD-DVD and Blueray arguement, your point is not valid, the HD-DVD drive for the 360 and the PS3 have been shown to give the same if not better performance over HDMI than some standalones, why have 2 boxes that can do the same thing??

I will probably get a PS3 at some point, mainly because of the upcoming games that I want to play on it. Maybe I'll get a 360 too just to play with friends, but it takes a back seat to the PS3. Sony have finally started to make some positive movements with the PS3, although the backwards compatibility issue is just stupid. In spite of the price drops and upcoming games, I wonder if it's just too late.

Sony really messed up with the PS3, which is a shame.

Well i got a 360 a few months after it was released in UK, it lasted unitll just before this christmas. and the motherboard needed replacing. I've been at uni anyway so it was my brother at home who was playing it.

However my brother got a ps3 for xmas so while i was home from uni i played on that.

It all depends what you prefer to play on the console for. For the year and a half before uni i mainly played on xbox live because i far prefer multiplayer than single player. At the moment the 360 is better for online multiplayer. However if you prefer to play offline the 360 and ps3 are both good choices of games.

The ps3 never really appealed to me because it just has the one game coming out that i would like to play which is metal gear solid 4. Although if you really like movies, the ps3 is the cheapest blu-ray player and it does seem blu ray will win overall as the film studio companies are starting only to produce blu ray at some point (warner bros and paramount?? can't remember at the moment).

Just try and play on them somewhere like a friends house and then decide
