I cancelled a car insurance policy yesterday and they've charged me £75 for the pleasure!

£40 of which was a 'short term rate' and £35 of it was for a cancellation fee (plus another £9 for the insurance period that had already lapsed)

I'm ever so slightly horrified - surely this can't be right? Anyone care to shed some light on it for me? I just rang them again and all I got was that is that way that it is and its tough!

No doubt there will be something in the small print of your policy that outlines these "cancellation" fees, and I also have no doubt that they be in tiny writing. I'd certainly talk to trading standards about it, and throw a fit at the company. What was the company name btw?

Yeah there will be something in the terms and conditions. If you have already paid in full, then you might have to put this one down to experience.

However if you pay by monthly direct debit, cancel it, and let the fuckers chase you for it.

It's contractual, although your contract should explain this and if it doesn't then you could just cancel the DD and tell them to swivel.

sorry hun, it is bad news.

You wont be able to claim it back, it is a cancellation fee which will be worded somewhere in your policy.

Count yourself lucky they didnt decide to throw in an admin fee...like Endsleigh do!!
