Charities and volunteers were urged today to put their names forward for an annual award scheme that recognises the importance of information technology (IT) in the voluntary sector.
Nominations for the IT Volunteer Awards 2007 have opened, and anyone who has volunteered their professional IT skills, or charities that have made use of IT volunteers over the past year can enter.
The awards, run by iT4Communities (iT4C), the national volunteering programme of the Information Technologists' Company, aim to recognise and celebrate the best and most innovative examples of IT volunteering and projects.
The winning projects in each of the award categories will receive a cash prize and will gain publicity for their cause.
Last year, awards went to volunteers and organisations involved in projects including a mental health charity website, an art gallery ticketing system and a Citizen's Advice Bureau referral system.
John Davies, programme director of iT4C, said: "IT volunteers make an enormous contribution to both the industry and the community as a whole. iT4C's volunteers have already provided more than £2m worth of contribution in skills and time, so it is vital that these efforts are recognised and rewarded.
"Without volunteering, many organisations and individuals would not have access to the high level of IT support and consultancy that they need in the digital age."
The deadline for nominations is October 6. The winners will be announced at the Awards event and reception on November 29 at the Information Technologists' Company Hall in London.
