Is there anything about them that can make you feel ill?

Much in the same way that GCH can give you carbon monoxide posioning - or is it the boiler that does that? Anyway you get the idea

If they haven't been turnt on for ages they can stink which i guess could make you feel ill.

In short, no. Nothing is burnt, nothing is released into the air you'll be breathing. You'd be more likely to feel unwell because of keeping the doors/windows closed to try and keep the place warm - stale air leads to headaches.
