we did have a "what are you reading now?" thread I think, but I dont think anyone actually reads any of the "what are you x now?" threads really :p
there are plenty of people on here who like books, I used to read looooads when I Was younger, but since coming to uni I dont think I've managed to read a single (fiction) book at all unfortunately
your best bet is just making a thread asking if anyone has read the book / author / theme / etc you wana talk about :)

How?
November's book was The Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor. Just read it and join in with (any) discussion had about it.
I have to admit that I haven't had a chance to read it yet and probably won't. RL has taken over a bit recently :(

Meh. The book club only discuss rubbish books :p I could give them a decent reading list (and gave Franki some of it for her birthday).

Suggest one for the book club and it might make me pick another one up. :p

Ok.
I propose The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodr Dostoevskii. One of the finest books ever written and one of the genuine 'feel good' books. It's a bit of a heavyweight (around 600 pages) so if that's too much...
The Master & Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov
THE best book I have ever read. It inspires faith in a world beyond and something that is not mechanical or inorganic. Storming stuff and definitely one of the top 10 books of the twentieth century.

I have been meaning to read some Dostoevskii for a while however i'm voting for Crime and Punishment - mainly because i started it when I was about 13 and never finished.....

I think C&P is my least favourite Dostoevsky, it took me years to trawl through it when I was younger... though on second reading I did get a lot more out of it. I would put forward The Idiot, and Notes from Underground as being two that should be required reading :thumb:
However, I feel I have to stick up for The Star of the Sea - it is by no means rubbish. I found it a really gripping read. Enjoyment and appreciation of different genres of literature are very important imo, and it's always worth remembering that some people do read for pure enjoyment and escapism rather than to build on their knowledge of existentialist values ;)

Agreed. C&P is ok but far from his best.
I propose the Master & Margarita for the next book club (the Michael Glenny translation is the best).

I think I should deviate from my Clive Cussler obsession for a bit and start to read more insightful books :p. I've been contemplating picking up a Dostoevsky, but the only thing stopping me is the thought of regretting it afterwards because of the difficulty. But I'm thinking of reading Crime and Punishment after I finish a few Swedish classics I have to tick off my list.
