Does this happen automatically like it used to, if so where can I find them on my hard drive?

If you go into options -> Messages, it does tell you the file name & location of where your chat logs are kept.

i dont think it is automatic, when you use messenger live for the first time, and close your first chat window it will ask you if you want to save your messages. otherwise you have to go into options and switch it on.

To see if they are actually on your hard drive, they are stored in My Documents --> My received files --> *your username* --> History.
They be stored as XML files, but if you open them with internet explorer you can read them fine.
