Hi, i know there are probably hundreds of questions about this but i have searched and can't find exactly what i am looking for. Basically i have a laptop and i want to know how i can connect it to the internet.
My laptop has built in ethernet but i have no idea what this does. I have a broadband connection on my desktop pc through a modem but how do i fget a broadband connection on my laptop. I don't want to go wireless for the moment but just wanted to know what connections i need where etc.
Thanks

If it has an ethernet socket, you can simply connect it to the modem. If it's actually a router/modem you can have both computers connected at the same time.
This should simply work, unless the modem is set up to only allow a properly-identified computer to connect...

Are you on ADSL or Cable? (Adsl is where broadband comes in through a phone line, Cable you'll have a co-ax cable going into a (probably) motorolla modem)

Anyway,

If yer on cable, you can unplug the cable modem from your desktop computer, and using the same wire, plug it into your laptop.

If you're on ADSL, you'll most likely have a USB Adsl modem, you'll need to find the acompanying disc for the adsl modem, run the cd on your laptop and connect the adsl modem into your laptop.

If you want both machines running online at the same time then you'll need a router, for cable you just need an ethernet router, for adsl, you'll need a router with adsl intergrated. However if you need to buy a router you'll more than likely want to get a wireless one now, instead of having to buy one in the near future.

If you're getting Broadband you might as well look into getting an all in one device that does Ethernet & Wireless as it's gonna be less messy then seperate units

I'd say go for a broadband package that has unlimited downloads rather thenthe fastest speeds, some packages I've seen have such fast speed but at full throttle you'll have used up your allowance in 30 minutes of downloading.

I'd say look at ISP's like UK Online that start from £9.99 for 1 mb/s with unlimited downloads and uploads - if you been using dial up all this time then having a connection that is like 20 times faster then what you have now and will let you do almost anything you want

http://www.ukonline.net/

Until about a week ago I was on 1mb/s for over a year, now on 8 mb/s but not much difference except wen it comes to watching online video files and downloading massive files.

Yeah they do, a co-ax cable screws into the modem at the back.

& Diamond, I think she already has broadband

I do have a broadband connection already on my desktop pc which uses a modem through a cable. Looks like i just have to connect the modem to my laptop and il be ready to go. I am looking at going wireless in the future but at the moment i am quite happy to use cables. Thanks everyone!

Yeah just disconnect the cable from the desktop and plug it into the laptop. You may need to power cycle (That's pull the power from the modem and put it back in again, not using the power switch at the top of the modem!) before it works properly though.

Argh!!!! i have tried to connect the modem to my laptop but it doesn't work. I have set up a new connection using connection wizard butwhen i try to connect it says 'no dial tone detected'. I have found out that my laptop has a built in 56k modem and i have brought a phone-modem cable and plugged one end into my laptop and one end into the phone socket but that won't work either. I don't understand how it works bcause the diagram on the packet for the cable says it should work if i connect one end into my laptop and the other in the phone line.

Broadband doesn't work with the 56k modem. Forget about the modem. Just plug the BB modem in an ethernet or usb socket, whichever one fits (I hope it's ethernet, it makes things much more simple).

Ok i have no managed to get the laptop to recognise the modem but i can't install it because i haven't got the modem installation disk anymore. Is there any way that the driver will be on my desktop pc because my modem is installed on there, i could copy it to disk and insert it into my laptop.

No, I'm pretty sure you need to install it. If it needs a driver it's a usb modem then, pity...

On the modem is there an ethernet socket as well? If you use the ethernet port instead of the USB you don't need drivers :)
