1)You did connect the separate cable for the speakers, right? And in the right socket? (Sorry for the stupid question)
2)If it's an onboard sound card, is it turned on in the BIOS settings?
3)Did you install the drivers for the sound card?
4)Make sure the monitor's setting for volume is turned up.

It's not my computer, i just use it so i wasn't actually there when it was set up. I do know the monitor volume is up though, as for the rest i'm going to need it in a step by step guide. I'm very confident on the using the internet, not so confident when dealing with hard ware!

Well... First see if there's an audio cable coming out from the monitor and where it goes.
About the drivers, it's not going to be easy to see if they're installed. If the OS is XP, try a right-click on "My computer" then properties, go to "hardware" and "device manager" and see if a sound card is listed there.
For the BIOS setting, you have to enter the BIOS settings when the computer has just been turned on or rebooted (usually by pressing delete) and check there (not advisable if you don't know what you're doing, especially if it's not your computer).
So, in short, if the cable's there and correctly plugged tell the person who owns the machine to fix it.

Sounds to me like you need to plug the cable into the back of the monitor and into the sound card, so really theres should be three cables coming from the back of your monitor
1.Power
2.VGA/DVI
3.Sound
